Underground Film Club: Die Hard

LG & the Rooftop Film Club have teamed up & taken over the inside of a disused railway arch tucked behind Waterloos Lower Marsh. It's been kitted out with a couple of cocktail bars, a mini golf course and a few street food vendors. Way more reasons to get to a film early than an Odeon or Vue cinema will ever give you. I fully recommend taking the time to have a couple of cocktails, a mulled wine or grub from Roller Dogs. Perfect pre movie munch.

I love that cinema is becoming a more of a social event these days. We don't have to go to our usual cinema, eat in our usual chain restaurants or fight through an army of screaming kids. We can do something a little a different, see something a little different and now we can also see movies of yesteryear that we could only ever watch on TV's at home. The best thing about the Underground Film Club is the fact you wear wireless noise cancelling headphones, meaning you can't hear all the damned popcorn rustling. I'm now of the opinion that this the way all movies should be watched.

Die Hard - Mini Review

What makes Die Hard a classic Christmas movie? To be honest, the movie itself is basically about an office Christmas party that gets a little out of hand. Which I'm sure we can all relate to, right? So with out getting to heavy on the subtext, the Christmassy theme is merely bought to us by a few trees and a the classic line "now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho" - masterfully delivered by the stone-faced Alan Rickman, who arguably gives us the greatest action movie villain of all time in Hans Gruber. His signature slurring of words & staggered delivery of his lines gives you the feeling that this guy is so calm, that he's seriously dangerous. Especially in comparison to our panicked, yet resourceful & quick witted protagonist, John McClane.  It wasn't until watching this on the big screen that i really picked up on the fact that McClane has three weakness's that make him one of the most relatable action heroes we've ever had. One: his potential divorce. Two: his shoes (a lack of) and Three: the fact he is alone in that building with only a walkie talkie for help. Which brings me on to a point of the movie I really love, the relationship between McClane & Sgt. Al Powell. I never realised this before, but these two could possibly be the best "buddy-cop" duo of all time. How? Well, here we have two seemingly ordinary, unremarkable men in extraordinary circumstances who manage to topple a ruthless terrorist organisation with all the buddy-cop pastiches, despite having never met, seen each other, or even know each others names. That my friends, is very smart film making that has gone totally under the radar, mainly due to the perfect action set pieces & copious amount of gun fire. So there you have it, Die Hard may not make Christmas a theme or plot device in this movie, but Bruce Willis puts a Santa Claus hat on a dead terrorist & thats enough for me.

  1. This looks amazing - I can't wait to go on Sunday for their screening of A Muppet's Christmas Carol. I totally agree that cinema is becoming more social nowadays, exactly how it should be. It should be an experience. The decor and everything just looks great!
